Complete List of AVMA accredited Online Veterinary Technician Schools.
Many people talk of obtaining a degree from online vet schools. This is somewhat confusing because the top degree you can get from online veterinary schools is a degree in veterinary medical technology. Remember, a veterinarian is a doctor of veterinary medicine and therefore needs medical courses, lab studies that cannot be obtain online. You wouldn't trust your doctor if he never had a years of education and rigorous training & trials.
However, with that being said there are several other options for those who want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine without becoming a doctor. There are several veterinary technician classes online and vet assistant classes online though currently only four online vet technician programs are accredited by the AVMA. They are:
Cedar Valley College
Penn Foster College
St. Petersburg College
Campus & Online Vet Schools, Technical & Assistant Degrees
Though several other programs are available to help you obtain a veterinary technician degree. Each school has different learning methods -some by videos, internet programs, online tests, textbooks, manual logbooks but they have the same curriculum as campus programs. Although in lieu of physical lab they require a certain amount of hours a week, usually 10, in a mentorship(working with a vet) to gain hands on experience. You are required to have both small and large animal experience even if you wish to specialize in only one field.
There are a few advantages & disadvantages to an online vet school. Online programs offer flex time so you can still have a full time job as you continue your studies to become a veterinary technican. Also in many cases you actually get more hands on experience depending on the mentorship program that you choose. It also offers you a chance to learn by different means than a classroom setting. Some people are more adept at learning from videos & a computer than a classroom and a professor. You should register and check out the different online veterinary medicine curriculums from every school since where's its located is not a factor. A disadvantage is that if you want to go to school part-time in an online vet tech school most financial aid packages don't cover it (again check with the vet school individually). Though schlorships and fulltime aid may be available though various avenues. The online veterinary school can usually tell you what's currently available.
The veterinary technician is an integral part of veterinary medicine. Veterinarians rely on their expertise daily. So whether you choose to pursue a campus program or an online vet tech school, it is a rewarding experience.
In the same vein, veterinary assistants are very important to a vet practice. They usually work closest with the pets and the clients. They hold the pets, are on a more social level with the clients, coordinate records, and can do anything from cleaning cages to drawing and preparing blood samples for testing. Either way an online degree in veterinary medicine must begin with a first step, which is just a click away.
