Temperament /Training Tips
The Mastiff was originally bred for guard duties and as a fighting dog. Todays version is a calm gentle giant. It is a good natured intelligent family dog. It rarely barks but it is in its nature to defend a territory or the family. It will hold a stranger at bay rather than attack until a family member reassures it.
Grooming Requirements
Brush and wipe with a wet towel daily. Bathe as needed(not to often every 8 weeks or more)
Breed History
Established in Britain as early a the Roman invasion. It was probably brought to the island by traders as around 6th century BC. They were used by the Romans in the arenas for bullfighting. A Mastiff came to America on the Mayflower. By the end of World War 2 they were almost extinct in Britain. A fresh infusion from the United States and Canada brought the breed back. They have been used for Police Work, Military, Search and Rescue, Weight pulling competitions.
