Temperament /Training Tips
Labrador is an intelligent and curious dog.
These dogs have undergone a massive surge in popularity both as pets and working function. They have retained their affiliation for water and are higly valued by bird game hunters. Their scenting skills have been relied on heavily by our law enforcement in the areas of drugs, explosives, arms. Their trustworthy nature has made them valuable as guide dogs. They are not sedentary dogs by nature and you must be prepared to give them plenty of exercise or else they do tend to put on weight fast. They are easy to train due to their intelligence and are great with kids.
Grooming Requirements
They require daily brushing of the coat, and a bath every 4-8 weeks(or lesser)...make sure to clean ears after swimming to lessen chance of infection.
Breed History
They were originally from Newfoundland, but fisherman from England brought them home because of their penchant for helping haul the nets and their love of water. They were then interbred with the flat coated retreivers until finally in 1903 a standard was created for the labrador itself.
