    Temperament /Training Tips
Dachshund are lively, affectionate, proud and clownish at times. They should never be overfed since they can gain weight really fast. Breeders think that the long haired variety is significantly calmer. They do well in apartment situations, although they do need exercise daily. They are average shedders. When exercising them make sure to discourage jumping to protect their back.
    Grooming Requirements
Daily combing and brushing should be enough for the smmoth and longhaired variety. The wire haired type needs to be professionally trimmed twice a year.
    Breed History
Originated from Germany some 100 years ago. They were primarily developed for Badger hunting (dachs is badger in german) The smaller variety with their terrier like qualities were used for small games. Their instinct to go underneath bushes and dig after their target endeared them to hunters.
